7 killed in Orissa flash floods

It was a manic Monday for people in Orissa. Seven people were killed and 18, including six fishermen, went missing in the Bay of Bengal off Paradeep in flash floods caused by incessant rains over the past 24 hours.

President A P J Abdul Kalam had to abort his trip to Berhampur.

The Met Department predicted more rains over Orissa and the northern parts of the west coast in the next 24 hours as a consequence of deep depression over the north Bay of Bengal crossing the Orissa coast and stabilising over Cuttack.

In Kerala, three people were killed and there were heavy losses to crop and property. Heavy rains, meanwhile, continued to lash Chhattisgarh for the second consecutive day making authorities put all the 16 districts on high alert.

Sources said authorities in north coastal Andhra Pradesh have been put on alert following heavy rains. CM Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said people from the vulnerable areas would be evacuated to safer places.

Moderate to heavy rains lashed Himachal Pradesh too as monsoon remained active in mid and lower hills of Kangra, Hamirpur and Una district.
